Carpal Tunnel, Trigger Finger and De Quervain's Release
Overview
Carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger and De Quervain's tenosynovitis are common hand conditions caused by tight tunnels around nerves or tendons. Symptoms may include numbness, tingling, catching, locking, thumb-side wrist pain or reduced hand function.
When splints, injections, therapy or activity changes do not provide lasting relief, release surgery may be considered.
Who may benefit from release surgery?
Carpal tunnel release is considered for persistent nerve symptoms, night waking, weakness, muscle wasting or abnormal nerve studies. Trigger finger release is considered when triggering persists or recurs after injections. De Quervain's release is considered for persistent thumb-side wrist pain despite non-operative care.
What does the procedure involve?
Each procedure releases the tight tissue causing compression or tendon catching. Carpal tunnel release divides the transverse carpal ligament. Trigger finger release opens the A1 pulley. De Quervain's release opens the tight first dorsal compartment around the thumb tendons.
Recovery after hand release surgery
Recovery is usually focused on wound healing, swelling control and early finger motion. Nerve recovery after carpal tunnel release depends on the severity and duration of compression.
Rehabilitation protocol
You will receive a procedure-specific protocol for carpal tunnel, trigger finger or De Quervain's release.
FAQs
Are these day procedures?
They are commonly performed as day procedures, depending on patient and anaesthetic factors.
When can I use my hand?
Gentle use often starts early, while heavy gripping waits until the wound is comfortable.
Will numbness improve immediately after carpal tunnel release?
Tingling may improve quickly, but long-standing numbness or weakness may take months.
Can trigger finger come back?
Recurrence after release is uncommon but possible.
Will I need hand therapy?
Some patients benefit from therapy for swelling, stiffness or scar sensitivity.
