Distal Biceps Tendon Repair
Overview
The distal biceps tendon attaches the biceps muscle to the radius bone near the elbow. It helps bend the elbow and rotate the forearm, especially with palm-up movements such as using a screwdriver, lifting objects or turning a key. A rupture can cause a sudden pop, bruising, pain, weakness and a change in the contour of the upper arm.
Distal biceps tendon repair aims to restore the tendon to bone and improve elbow flexion and forearm rotation strength.
Who may benefit from distal biceps repair?
Active patients with a complete distal biceps rupture often benefit from repair because non-operative treatment can leave lasting weakness, particularly with supination strength. Surgery may also be considered for patients whose work, gym training or sport requires strong lifting and twisting power.
What does the procedure involve?
The torn tendon is identified, mobilised and reattached to the radius using strong sutures and anchors. Acute tears are generally more straightforward to repair. For chronic tears, A/Prof Ernstbrunner may require allograft augmentation to recunstruct the retracted tendon.
Recovery after distal biceps repair
The repair is protected early with a brace or splint. Motion is gradually restored, followed by progressive strengthening once tendon healing is established. Heavy lifting, pulling and gym-based loading return later in the recovery.
Rehabilitation protocol
You will receive a distal biceps repair protocol outlining protection, motion limits, strengthening progression and return to lifting.
FAQs
Can distal biceps rupture be treated without surgery?
Yes, but complete tears often leave weakness, especially with twisting strength.
How urgent is assessment?
Early assessment is helpful because acute repairs are usually easier than delayed reconstructions.
Will I regain full strength?
Many patients regain good strength, though recovery depends on injury severity and healing.
When can I lift weights again?
Heavy lifting returns gradually after tendon healing and strengthening.
Is numbness possible after surgery?
Temporary numbness around the incision or forearm can occur, which usually recovers over time.
Book or Refer Today
For suspected distal biceps rupture, book an assessment to confirm the diagnosis and discuss repair.
