Hamstring Repair

Overview

Proximal hamstring tears occur when one or more hamstring tendons detach from the sitting bone. They may occur during sprinting, waterskiing, slipping, kicking or forced hip flexion with the knee straight. Symptoms can include bruising, pain sitting, weakness, difficulty walking and loss of confidence running.

Surgery aims to reattach the torn tendons to bone and restore strength.

Who may benefit from hamstring repair?

Surgery may be considered for complete avulsions, multiple tendon tears, significant retraction, persistent weakness or high activity demands. Partial tears and lower-demand injuries may be managed without surgery depending on symptoms and imaging.

What does the procedure involve?

The torn tendons are identified, mobilised and repaired back to the ischial tuberosity using strong sutures and anchors. The sciatic nerve is protected during surgery.

Early recovery protects the repair from stretch and load. Sitting, hip flexion and knee extension may be limited initially. Strengthening and running progress gradually over months.
