Pectoralis Major Repair
Overview
The pectoralis major is the large chest muscle used for pushing, pressing and powerful arm movements. Tears usually occur during heavy lifting, bench press or contact sport. Patients may notice a tearing sensation, bruising, weakness and a change in the contour of the chest or armpit.
Pectoralis major repair aims to restore the torn tendon to its attachment on the upper arm bone and improve strength, shape and function.
Who may benefit from repair?
Surgery is commonly considered for active patients with complete tendon tears, significant weakness, cosmetic deformity or high work and sporting demands. Early assessment is useful because acute repairs are often more straightforward than delayed reconstructions.
What does the procedure involve?
The torn tendon is identified, mobilised and repaired back to bone using strong sutures and fixation devices.
In chronically retracted tears, A/Prof Ernstbrunner will use an allograft augmentation to reconstruct the pectoralis major tendon.
Recovery after pectoralis repair
The repair is protected early in a sling. Shoulder motion is gradually restored, followed by strengthening. Heavy pressing, contact sport and maximal gym loading return later after tendon healing and strength recovery.
Rehabilitation protocol
You will receive a pectoralis major repair protocol outlining protection, range of motion limits and staged strengthening.
FAQs
Can a pectoralis tear heal without surgery?
Partial tears and low-demand patients may be managed without surgery. Complete tendon tears in active patients often benefit from repair.
When should I be assessed?
Early assessment is recommended, particularly if there is bruising, weakness or a visible change in chest contour.
Will I regain bench press strength?
Many patients regain good strength, but return to heavy lifting is gradual and depends on healing and rehabilitation.
How long will I wear a sling?
A sling is usually used for several weeks to protect the repair.
Can chronic tears be repaired?
Some chronic tears can be reconstructed with an allograft augmentation, but the operation may be more complex.
