Triceps Tendon Repair

Overview

The triceps tendon attaches the triceps muscle to the olecranon at the back of the elbow. It is responsible for straightening the elbow and is important for pushing, pressing, rising from a chair and weight-bearing through the arm. Triceps tendon tears are less common than biceps ruptures but can cause major weakness if the tendon is completely torn.

Triceps tendon repair aims to restore the tendon attachment and recover active elbow extension strength.

Who may benefit from triceps repair?

Surgery is usually considered for complete triceps tendon ruptures, loss of active elbow extension, significant weakness or high functional demands. Partial tears may sometimes be managed without surgery if elbow extension remains strong and the tendon is stable.

What does the procedure involve?

The torn tendon is mobilised and repaired back to the olecranon using strong sutures passed through bone tunnels or fixation devices. If the tear is chronic or the tendon quality is poor, augmentation or reconstruction may be required.

Recovery after triceps repair

The repair must be protected from forceful elbow extension early on. A brace or splint may be used while controlled motion is introduced. Strengthening is delayed until healing is secure, and heavy pushing or gym work returns gradually.

Rehabilitation protocol

You will receive a triceps tendon repair protocol outlining brace use, range of motion progression, strengthening and return to heavier loading.

FAQs

Can a triceps tendon rupture heal without surgery?

Some partial tears can be treated without surgery. Complete ruptures usually need repair to restore active elbow extension strength.

What symptoms suggest a triceps rupture?

Pain and swelling at the back of the elbow, bruising, weakness pushing away from the body and difficulty straightening the elbow can occur.

How long will the repair be protected?

Protection is usually required for several weeks, with motion and strengthening progressed in stages.

When can I return to pushing exercises?

Pressing and pushing exercises return gradually after tendon healing and strength recovery.

Can chronic triceps tears be repaired?

Some chronic tears can be repaired or reconstructed, but delayed cases may be more complex.
